World Economic Forum 2026 Underway in Davos: Global Leaders Tackle Economic Risks and AI Challenges

World Economic Forum 2026 Begins in Davos as Global Leaders Address Economy, AI and Geopolitics

The 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) is currently taking place in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, from January 19 to January 23, 2026, under the theme “A Spirit of Dialogue,” bringing together government leaders, business executives, civil society representatives, and experts to address pressing global issues. This year’s gathering is one of the largest in the forum’s history, with discussions focused on economic cooperation, geopolitical risks, innovation, and inclusive growth.

According to official figures, nearly 3,000 participants from around 130 countries are taking part in the summit, including approximately 830 chief executive officers, 64 heads of state and government, and a wide range of international organizations. The high attendance reflects the importance of multilateral dialogue amid rising global uncertainties.

A series of high-profile speeches and panels have already been held, including a much-anticipated address by U.S. President Donald Trump, who outlined economic achievements and future foreign policy objectives, and sessions led by global financial leaders on the resilience of the world economy in the face of political and trade tensions.

One of the standout themes this year has been the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping future economies. Experts at the forum highlighted both the opportunities and challenges posed by rapid technological change. The International Monetary Fund’s Managing Director warned that AI could disproportionately impact younger workers, potentially affecting roughly 60% of jobs in advanced economies and 40% globally as automation expands — raising important questions about skills training and equitable growth.

Beyond broad economic debates, significant investment deals and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were announced at the forum. For example, the government of Maharashtra, India, signed MoUs worth ₹30-lakh crore in investment commitments projected to generate around 30 lakh jobs, with participation from global companies spanning technology, manufacturing, and energy sectors.

The WEF will conclude on January 23, 2026, and is widely expected to set the tone for global policy collaboration throughout the year. Jens Stoltenberg, a key attendee, described the event as a critical platform for dialogue at a time when divergent geopolitical strategies and technological disruptions require renewed cooperation.
