Zelensky Says He Agreed Post-War U.S. Security Guarantees with Trump at Davos

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he and U.S. President Donald Trump have reached an agreement in principle on post-war security guarantees for Ukraine, a critical step toward ending the nearly four-year conflict with Russia. Zelensky said the framework for these guarantees is essentially “done” and ready for formal approval by both the Ukrainian Parliament and the U.S. Congress, though he did not publicly disclose specific terms of the deal.

The announcement came shortly after a private meeting between the two leaders, described by Zelensky as constructive, and followed his forceful appeal to European allies to step up support for Kyiv’s defense. While discussions showed progress on security assurances — which would legally bind the U.S. to assist Ukraine if future aggression occurs — significant issues such as territorial disputes remain unresolved, and further negotiations are expected in upcoming trilateral talks with Russia scheduled in the United Arab Emirates. Trump characterized the Davos discussions as “good” but acknowledged that more work remains to finalize a comprehensive peace plan.
